homeward bound

12 February 2020

Nearly a decade ago, my husband Dave and I arrived on Dutch shores. Fresh-faced, open-minded, seeking adventure and everything else the world had to offer. We’ve recently returned home to New Zealand with a wish to put our family first, get closer to our roots (both metaphorical and literal… my gardening fingers are twitching) and a desire to simplify. In many ways, we’ve come full circle.

It was not long after arriving in the Netherlands that I discovered, and fell in love with the world of independent perfumeries. Shortly after, following a failed search for a perfume that was both independently created, and natural – the idea for Abel was born.

Abel’s shared heritage is a thread that runs through every aspect of our business and always has. Our name Abel, owes itself to the unique connection between Holland and New Zealand in the form of Abel Tasman – the Dutch explorer and first European to discover Aotearoa (as NZ is known by original Maori settlers). Not to mention our Master Perfumer Isaac Sinclair is New Zealand’s only Nose.

While New Zealand will become Abel’s new home base, the Dutch Kiwi legacy will continue… our team – all of whom remain with Abel – are majority Dutch, our perfume will continue to be produced in Holland, and while we don’t know what the future holds, we know the special connection between Abel’s two-part heritage will continue to flourish. As I rediscover my home country, and introduce my Dutch colleague Elise to her new city, I feel proud of Abel’s roots and excited for the future!

Best wishes from beautiful Wellington,

Frances
