Tell us about yourself!
A former punk rock kid, I’ve focused on perfume for the past 30 years. Aside from a stint selling shoes in high school, I have made my living with perfume. My partner, Stamatis, and I dreamed of building a business where people could play with scent and really break the rules. There’s nothing worse than trying to find something as intimate as a personal scent in an impersonal and intimidating place. We started Twisted Lily and it’s where we (and our pup, Winnie) get to know both the local and larger perfume communities. It’s all about conversation and making scent accessible.
What is your connection to Abel?
Stamatis and I started Twisted Lily about six years ago. Since then, we’ve been amazed by the acceleration of technology that’s enabled perfumers to access natural aroma molecules. Abel is at the forefront of these advancements, and the line is extremely wearable. We were thrilled to be the first retail location for Abel in New York; our customers had been clamoring for Abel!
What is your favourite fragrance and how does it make you feel?
That’s like asking me to pick my favourite child. (It’s Winnie.) But really – the line is so adaptable, there’s a scent that’ll work for any occasion. But if I had to pick two, I’d go with Golden Neroli for relaxed days and Grey Labdanum for when I want to feel a bit dapper. There’s something so warm and bright about the Golden Neroli. It makes me feel like I’ve still got the sun on my skin long after the day has ended; as the days get colder and darker here in New York, I’ve been reaching for it. The Grey Labdanum is a little more dressed up, but it’s comforting as well – like a cashmere sweater.
What is inspiring you at the moment?
Lady Gaga, specifically in A Star is Born. But also: NEZ – The Olfactory Magazine! The perfume publication has so much information; it’s like a great conversation that both inspires and teaches you something. Whenever customers ask about all-natural lines, I point them to Abel – and then to Nez, so they can learn just how cutting-edge Abel is.
