the FOUR

Tell us about yourself:

I’m a strange mix of yin and yang, and my life is a real juxtaposition of these two energies. On one side, the determined risk taker – constantly trying new things, hard to satisfy and always in the midst of the rollercoaster ride that is owning your own business.  One the other side, the introvert nurturer – never happier than when I’m cooking great food and enjoying it with family and friends in our home, sipping a perfect coffee in the early morning stillness with my husband Dave, or playing in the park with my two delicious little boys Rufus and Arthur. So long as I can keep those two sides in balance, I’m at my happiest.

What is your connection to Abel?

About five years ago (not long after moving to Amsterdam from New Zealand), I was looking for a natural perfume and couldn’t find one I loved. My background is in winemaking, and since childhood I’ve been particularly attracted to the world of scent. When I couldn’t find one, I was inspired to start the journey I’ve been on since – creating Abel. This month we are launching Abel 2.0 – the culmination of everything we’ve learnt so far.

What is your favourite fragrance and how does it make you feel?

I’m aware this is going to sound cliche (so my apologies!), but each fragrance has a special place in my heart and life. Golden neroli gave me peace and joy while pregnant, jaded after a long day and a single spray of cobalt amber has me ready for an evening out, and grey labdanum is my ‘serious face’ fragrance… the olfactory equivalent of pulling on a biker jacket!

What's inspiring you at the moment?

Autumn in Amsterdam. I don’t know if it’s the colouring trees and leaves thick underfoot, the warmth, light and smells radiating from beautiful interiors into dark crisp evenings, or the stylish inhabitants pulling out their winter wares and owning it on their bikes around the city. Every Autumn I fall in love with my adopted city once again.
